My first attempt was at Christmastime 1990. Everyone in the family remembers it as a dismal failure, even this many years later (of course they still remember the St Patrick's Day meal I butchered out of the Friend magazine when I was about 11 or 12, so what do I expect?). I actually haven't tried making it again since then, but I've asked everyone that I can think of for any tips. No luck. So I decided that since my family was celebrating "Oktoberfest" today, that it was time. So I got a recipe off the internet and went to it.
Dismal Failure II: The Sequel.
The dumplings were nice and waterlogged on the outside, dry on the inside, with plenty of bites that were just plain gross. The jam was the only good thing about it. The sauce wasn't right either. I couldn't find a good recipe. So I guess I will just have to keep tweeking it until I get it right. If I'm lucky, I'll finally get them right and my family won't want to try them, so I'll get to eat them all myself! So here are some pictures of the Germknödel Catastrophe.
Making the sauce while the dumplings boil in the background.
They look like cauliflower, don't you think?
I'm not so sure about these.
At this point, I had a feeling that they weren't going to be great.
But I added the requisite poppy seeds and vanilla sauce anyway.
That made it look a little better.
And the survey says:
Blech!
Not so sure.
Eww.
Nasty.
Gross.
Not too bad. But he cheated by adding a bunch of extra jam. Not a bad idea.
Yum. (Dale likes everything.)
And Rose likes everything these days, too!
A few pictures before everyone left.
Most of the gang.
The boy who looks just like his mommy.
What's a family gathering without a little geeking?
A little Lego action during the afternoon session today.

You'll have to send your parents on re-con to find out the secret of that dessert! It's a good P-day activity for them! :) Third times a charm, you know.
We used to go to Garmisch all the time when I was a kid. I don't think I have ever eaten that little treat. Maybe I should try it out. How did you get the umlaut on your germknodel? Do you have something downloaded on your computer? The only things I'm pretty good at making is jaeger schnitzel and maybe apfelkuchen. I love the lego idea for conference. Day two the kids would not sit still.
Fun pictures, your hair looks cute!
Good job for giving it another try! I've been trying and failing at bread making for the past year, and have finally got it down! Maybe you just need to try this recipie 2-3 times a week for a year! :)
Great picture of Cooper. He IS a blue-eyed, blonde haired you. Looks like a cooking adventure. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
I will have to ask my stepmom if she has any good recipes. She is actually German, she and her mom both make amazing authentic German dishes, so I am sure if anyone would know it would be them.
HI!!! I'm glad you commented! I have wondered how you guys were doing! Now I can find out:) Seems you are liking your new stomping ground. I'm sure you are especially liking it during the summer;)
Love the photo documentary of the experience!
Too funny. I think you need to make a friend who is German and knows how to make...long name no can say dumplings.
UR2 Funny!
I expect you to have those perfected by the time we visit you!
Well it was worth a shot uh? Cooper is a citie I loved the pic of him. Joey told me he was going to do Grant's hair like that for church! So I better get on the ball and get it cut. You should try it with Cooper though. I have to say it was pretty funny. Are you going to cut his hair anytime soon? I am having a hard time gripping that I need to cut his hair soon. Everyone keeps telling me, 'You have 4 Girls uh' and I am thinking he needs to start looking like a boy now I guess. I always wanted that little boy! Not sure when I will cute it but we shall see. Maybe before he turns two.LOL
