Hayden has always been good at everything he does. He has a lot of natural talent, but even more importantly, he really works hard at most everything he does. He has always been one of the best swimmers around, one of the best violinists around, etc. Well, recently he has joined a year round swim club that he'll be training with for the summer. Most of the kids on the team have been swimming year round for most of their lives. In other words, they are WAY better than Hayden. But he doesn't give up, he just keeps plugging away in the slow lane. And he's not slow, in normal standards! So it's a little humbling for him. Especially when it's 12 year olds passing him up!
He tried out for CAYSA last night. He was in it this year, but was in the intermediate group, and was one of the best. He was the concertmaster and didn't have to spend much time practicing to perfect his songs for it. Well, the conductor gave him a tongue lashing last night about spending more time practicing and knowing his positions and being more accurate. Honestly, it was just what Hayden needed. And then he played Hayden's violin. He is so amazing. And Hayden's violin is awful. We need a better one so bad. So I'm going to start doing daycare and we'll do whatever else we need to do so we can save up the $3-5000 that we need! Fun times. Anyway, Hayden took the constructive criticism very well--he actually thanked him for it! He was very humbled and on the way home kept talking about how he needs to do better practicing, etc. Oh, and he did make the highest level for orchestra. :)
All in all, a rather humbling day for him. But a good one.
