When I got called into the Stake Primary Presidency, I knew that I wanted to put on a day camp for the 8-11 year old girls. The boys get to go to Day Camp, so why not? Many months, many many hours later, and my dream became a reality! Yesterday we held our activity, "Daughters of a King Day Camp."
It turned out better than I ever dreamed.
I am so blessed to work with women who are hard workers, organized, pay attention to detail, and most importantly, feel and follow promptings of the Holy Ghost.
The camp isn't what I first envisioned. It was so much better. As we went along, and prayed, and planned, and prayed and planned some more, we created a framework for an activity that we thought would be enjoyable for the girls. Thanks to many, many volunteers who spent many, many, many hours, we were able to pull it off.
The girls loved it!
We had an opening meeting where the 120 girls were able to fill out a questionnaire about their moms while they waited for the meeting to begin. After an opening prayer, we had a guest speaker, Sister Pace, talk to the girls about what it means to be a princess. She talked to them about attributes that princesses aspire to. The girls were really listening! She asked them to stand when she said their favorite princess. What a surprise, about 3/4 of the girls stood when she said Anna and Elsa from Frozen. It was cute. She then had a couple of girls stand, and look in a mirror to see the faces of some real life princesses. Of course they saw their reflections. We handed out crowns to each of the girls, while Brittany Pace, who was dressed like a princess, sang, "Daughters of a King." It was mesmerizing. The girls loved it.
I then dismissed them to their classes. There were five, and they each went to all of the classes.
They enjoyed all of the classes, but the one that most of girls claimed as their favorite was cake decorating. They each got to use a frosting bag and practice piping frosting onto some practice cards before they decorated their actual cupcake. They had such a great time! And for the record, having a great time involves getting frosting everywhere. This class also smelled the best! We could smell it while walking down the hall, and it was heavenly! When they finished decorating, they got to eat their cupcake. That may have been a factor in why the class was the favorite!
Another class they did was woodworking. Each of the girls made a necklace holder. They took these pieces (thank you Dixon for cutting everything out, you're the best!):
And made this!
They were all so proud of their handiwork.
They had a hair care class, which was also lots of fun for the girls! They talked about hair care and hygiene a bit, and then they made a hair clip, and they also got their hair braided. They all looked so cute with their cute hairdos.
They made an Article of Faith game, since we are focusing on all the children memorizing and understanding the Articles of Faith this year. This activity involved cutting cardstock, punching holes, and assembling the game. It all went smoothly...until...we found out during the last rotation that we were short 13 copies. And then we jammed both copy machines in the building. Oi. Thanks to some very patient workers, we were able to get it all done in time.
And they had a bicycle safety class. They taught them how to change a flat tire and bicycle safety. They made a reflective license plate for their bikes, then went outside for a bike ride and a snow cone. Unfortunately the wind picked up, and it knocked the shade structures over, and even broke one of them.
At the very end, we had a video with pictures of Christ with children, and women from the scriptures to the song "Daughters of a King." During the chorus of each verse were pictures of each of the girls from the Stake. To me, the video was the high point of the activity. I hope that a girl that needed to feel important, included or loved felt that when she heard the words from that song, saw her picture on the screen, and saw her face in the mirror with a crown on.
I concluded, reminding the girls that each of them is a daughter of the King, and we were done!
It was a wonderful day!
