We were originally going to leave on Sunday to start driving, but we got so excited that we decided to leave on Friday instead. We left at about 5:45 am, heading towards Fresno, California.
(Turner is in there too--next to Cooper, he just didn't feel like being in a picture.)
Around 7:30 our AC went out. I turned the car off and on, turned the AC off and on, to no avail. The AC wouldn't kick on. No worries, it was only 7:30 am. In the middle of the desert.
It got hotter and hotter to almost unbearable temperatures in the van. It was 111 out, but driving in the sun with no AC made it feel a lot hotter than that.
We stopped at an Autozone and Porter went in and bought a can of freon for the AC. I was feeling a little desperate and didn't know what to do. Porter was trying to help but we just couldn't get the can of freon to attach to the air conditioner. The people at Autozone wouldn't come out and help us, they said that because of liability issues, they aren't allowed to help customers with their cars. We called AAA for help and they wouldn't help us either since the car was still drivable. I finally broke down and started crying. I was so frustrated. We decided to just get everyone a big cold drink with plenty of ice, and off we drove with the windows down at 70 mph. It was not the most pleasant experience, but it got us there. My left arm was burned. I ended up pulling my arm inside my shirt to protect it from the sun.
Our ears were ringing for hours after we arrived because the air was so noisy. We weren't able to listen to our book on CD, and could barely even hear the music that we were trying to rock out to. We took several cold drink and/or ice cream breaks along the way.
We also took a little stop to see the Redlands California Temple. Turner wanted to see as many temples as he could on our trip!
Trying to hold it together, although
This is how we really felt.
I was so glad to have Porter. There is nothing like a goofy teenager to help you realize that this is temporary and you will probably laugh about it someday.
As soon as we got to Karen and Steve's the kids jumped into the pool and spent most of the
rest of the day in it.
