Flashback to 2007

I have kept a journal off and on my whole life.  There are several years with big pieces missing, particularly the years that we had a computer crash and the journal was electronic.  But I have a little bit here, a little bit there.

One of the best parts of journal keeping for me, is going back and reading sweet things that my kids did or said years ago.  Especially after a night like last night, where I need to remember that not only do I love my kids, but I like them, too.

So today I read this little snippet, and it made me smile.

Things that happened at the Olivers today:
-Regan broke a plate.
-Regan hijacked 6 bottles of spices and made concoctions in her room.
-Regan spilled an entire bottle of cumin on her carpet.
-Leslie tried to make enchiladas and was out of cumin.
-While putting aforementioned bottles away, Regan dropped the only glass one down the stairs resulting in major shard cleanup.
-We lost the cat.
-We found the cat with a choke chain on, nearly suffocated and stuck behind the dryer (culprit:  Regan).
-Regan peed in my bed…massively…I didn’t know a three year old bladder could hold so much.
-Regan puked in her bed.

I’m ready for bed.  Anyone want to buy an adorable three year old girl?  Sorry, no refunds.

I am now laughing and almost in tears at the sweet little girl that my Regan used to be.  So I am going to share a few more from 2007 that made me smile.

Dix and Hayden are at a campout tonight.  We had hide-a-bed night and watched Star Wars Episode 4.  Turner was squealing through half the movie saying, “Airplane, airplane!” (Not to be confused with Da plane, da plane).  I put him to bed about halfway through the movie and finished it off with the three remaining kids.  When the movie was over they wanted me to tell them stories about when they were little.  After a while Regan fell asleep and I got in a deeper discussion with Landon and Porter.  We had a great talk.  It’s amazing how much they’ll tell you when their only two choices are to talk to mom or fall asleep.  Porter said something so cute.  He said, “Mom, I’m glad you’re not one of those moms like on TV that is so beautiful and only cares about shopping and stuff. So I guess I'm ugly, but at least he likes me.”

Last night I was reading to Regan, and took a little breather to talk to a boy for a minute.  Next thing I knew, she was sounding out the next word in the book by herself!  I couldn’t believe it!!!  She's three!!! So she helped me read The Cat in the Hat and was so cute.  This morning we are helping her through the first Bob Book.  You know, “Mat sat.  Sam sat.  Mat sat on Sam.”  She knows all the sounds and sounds them out, but is just figuring out how to blend them together.  I’m sure that will come with practice.  She’s really excited to be reading!  Hayden’s mad because he’s no longer the earliest reader in the family!

Every week when the garbage truck comes, Turner hears it and gets all excited and runs for the door or closest window to watch it.  I always tell him, “Hurry!  Hurry!”  The other day, as we were driving down the street, every time he saw a truck he would say excitedly, “Hurry!”  It took me a few minutes to figure it out, but I guess he thinks that a truck is called a “hurry” since I say that every time the garbage truck comes.  So now we call trucks “hurries.”  Our first word in Turnerese.

Day of rest?  I think not.  The day seemed long today.  Dix had meetings all morning of course, and then I took Landon and Hayden to choir (Hayden to sing, Landon so he wouldn’t get beat up by the babysitter).  Porter babysat Regan and Turner.  By the time we got done, we hurried and got all our finishing touches done and went to church.  Dix didn’t feel well and left early.  I realized at about 4:20 that I left my keys in the diaper bag which was in his car at home.  So I had to call him and he came back and rescued us.  Luckily we had dinner ready (roast and veggies).  Then we had FHE.  We had activity first, then put Turner to bed, then did the lesson and snack.  It worked out really well.  Hayden gave a really good lesson on the Plan of Salvation and I was amazed at his understanding.  I couldn’t have told you what the plan of salvation was when I was 12.  Even Porter has a good understanding.

Okay, now I feel better.  I guess I can get back to work.
